Public Invited to 2023 University of Mary Fall Band Concert
BISMARCK, ND — On Saturday, October 21, the University of Mary Concert Band performs its annual Fall Band Concert at 4 p.m. in Founders Hall of the Lumen Vitae University Center, on campus.
Dennis Gowen, professor of Music and director of Bands and High Brass at Mary, says the students are eagerly looking forward to the annual fall presentation.
“We completed a very successful spring European Tour of Spain and France,” commented Gowen, “where University of Mary musicians enjoyed such an enriching and memorable opportunity to share our artistic offerings with music enthusiasts from ‘across the pond.’ The students and I are excited to present our annual fall program to our wonderful Bismarck-Mandan regional audience.”
Featured works include “Glory and Triumph” by Hector Berlioz (from his Grande Symphonie Funèbre et Triomphale, Op. 15), “Incantation and Dance” by John Barnes Chance, and “Sea Songs” by Ralph Vaughan Williams. “Sea Songs, which enjoys its 100th anniversary this year, was originally conceived and premiered as the second movement of Vaughan Williams’s famous English Folk Song Suite before being removed and re-published as its own work by the composer,” added Gowen.
Another special work is “On the Wing” by Bismarck composer, trumpeter, and educator J. Abelardo Flores. “We’re excited to welcome Abelardo onto campus to work with our band students, and to conduct his piece at our fall concert,” says Gowen. “He has a vast wealth of experience and is such a wonderful member of our Bismarck-Mandan musical community.”
The concert, which is free and open to the public, concludes with a feature by the horn section, the adored and often-programmed “American Overture” by Joseph Willcox Jenkins. Join the University of Mary Concert Band for a spectacular array of outstanding musical works on Saturday, October 21 at 4 p.m.
